Kurtains

Kelp Curtains, hereby called Kurtains, function as barriers encircling ocean preservation areas, creating so-called “quiet zones” for whales and other marine life.
The structure mimicks systems used to grow kelp commercially and through thick “curtains” of kelp and seaweed, creates an attractive destination for a myriad of sea-dwelling organisms.

The idea of possible noise isolating properties of kelp arose during my visit to the Seili Research Center, in the Tuurku archipelago in Finland.
During the visit the group of students from three different universities had a workshop with specialists in the field of algae and marine ecosystems in the Baltic Sea.
Not much has been researched on the topic of kelp in relation to noise and one of the only journal articles on the topic calls for more research on these properties.

The Kurtains were a part of the group project Out of the Blue.
